The best kept secret of Haines is the fact that it is home to more than 50 local artists. Galleries and gift shops offer a comprehensive array of work by local artists as well as those from other parts of Alaska. There are approximately 20 galleries and gift shops in Haines and there is a good chance you'll see an artisan at work. In an area rich with their culture, the skills of the Tlingits' wood-carving and jewelry-making still flourish. Select stores and galleries in Haines carry these unique, traditional works of art to take home with you as a keepsake of your Haines experience. Check ou the Trappers Cabin at Totem Village in the Fort Seward Parade Grounds for a visit to the woodcarving world of hometown multimedia artist, Tresham Gregg. Tresham is usually carving right there in the studio gallery. His works include: paintings, silk screen prints, silver and beaded jewelry, and puppets of all sorts.
